He is a Senior Fellow and Head of Urban Studies, Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi. He was previously Director of the National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi and held the IDFC Chair in Urban Economics at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy; Director of Multi-level Planning Unit, the Planning Commission of India; United Nations Project Team Leader of Decentralisation Project, Government of Iran; and Senior Economist at the United Nations Centre for Regional Development, Nagoya, Japan. He was a member of the former Prime Minister’s National Review Committee on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, the JNNURM Technical Advisory Group, the High Powered Expert Committee on Urban Infrastructure Investment Requirements and the Advisory Group of Experts on Decentralization (AGRED) of UN- Habitat. Currently, he is a member of the GIZ-ADB Sponsored City Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) and the City Indicators Programme, hosted at the University of Toronto.
Om Mathur received his Master’s degree in Economics, Delhi School of Economics, and pursued graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (USA) and Harvard University, Cambridge (USA).
